Our journey began in the heart of Sweden, in Sigtuna, the nation’s oldest town with a history that spans over a millennium. Sigtuna stands as a place where ancient traditions meet modern innovation, and it’s here that we firmly rooted our passion for cuisine.
In 2016, we embarked on an exploration to breathe new life into and elevate the cherished tradition of flatbread. We were resolute in our mission to take this remarkable bread to new horizons. After numerous experiments and creative trials, we finally stood proud with our crowning achievement - our golden flatbread crackers. Their delightful crispiness and crunch, make for ideal companions when paired with a cheese platter, serve as excellent appetizers with tasty toppings, or as a snack with your favorite drink.
The process of crafting these crispy flatbreads was a painstaking artisanal endeavor. It demanded a specific fermentation process to achieve the desired airiness, a process that, combined with the unique notches, held the key to perfecting the flatbread crackers. Our bread, a symbol of Swedish heritage, is carefully chosen for its quality. Our rapeseed oil is sourced from Swedish farms and refined to offer the ultimate taste and crispiness. To strike the right flavor balance, we selected Cornish Sea Salt from Cornwall, a perfect match for our flatbread crackers.
Sigtuna Deli made its debut towards the end of 2017, and since then, we have shared our passion with those who appreciate the love for good food and culinary traditions. Our journey persists, and we eagerly anticipate crafting even more flavorful chapters in our history, reminiscent of how Swedish flatbreads has enriched our culinary heritage for centuries.
Flatbread holds a cherished place in Swedish cultural heritage, boasting a rich history that stretches back to the medieval era. The Flatbread Academy offers a comprehensive definition, describing it as: thinly rolled, notched bread, baked swiftly at high temperatures, ideally around 400-500 degrees Celsius. This bread variety typically features petite bubbles and is crafted from various flours, including barley, rye, wheat, oats, peas, and even bark, either in singular or blended combinations.
Flatbread can be prepared with or without sourdough, yeast, and potatoes.
Swedes have been mastering the art of flatbread baking since the late Middle Ages as a practical method to preserve grains over extended periods. The unique ability of this bread to withstand lengthy storage rendered it a vital component of the Swedish diet, embodying the essence of Swedish bread culture.
Flatbread also serves as a cultural gem and is often considered a Northern Swedish bread, with barley being the dominant grain used in the northern regions of Sweden.
